About Us
In 1929 Garrett Veenstra was an ambitious entrepreneur with a wife and three young children to support. At the beginning of the Great Depression, he started a new business of wrecking old buildings and selling used lumber and materials. In short order the Company added new building materials, and in 1932 opened a second location in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
After World War II Charles Veenstra, Garrett´s eldest son, joined the business and added cash & carry operations Cashway and Big Buck beginning in 1960, and Custom Component Company® in 1961. Veenstra Lumber, Cashway, and Big Buck all merged under the Big Buck Building Center name in 1973. The holding company, Veenstra Investment Corporation, retains the family name to this day.
In 1978 Valerie Hansen, Garrett´s grand-daughter, joined the business and changed it´s focus from cash & carry to serving professional builders, consolidated distribution locations for efficiency, grew truss manufacturing, and added the ProMillwork® division.
Today the Company specializes in two areas with deep expertise and production capacity: framing systems (trusses, engineered wood products, dimensional lumber); and millwork/trim packages. Our clients are building professionals, lumberyards, and industrial accounts.
During 2004-2005 the Company relocated all divisions to our newly acquired complex, the Construction Zone®. Consolidation at the Construction Zone means state-of-art infrastructure, no duplication of overhead, a focus on value-add manufacturing, and efficient material handling and logistics.
Over the years the Company has changed to better serve the needs of our customers. Our customers and the communities we serve have changed, too. The lesson learned from such a long history is to anticipate change and to develop a "learning" organization.
"We´re working smarter to be your preferred building partner for the 21st century."
